The town of Sopron with its 60,000 inhabitants, which gives the name of the wine region and Krosbach far in western Hungary and protrude as a kind of needle in neighboring Austria in. Because of this exposed location and proximity to the Neusiedlersee wine region Kroisbach has a more temperate climate than the rest of the country.
In winter it is more pleasant in summer cooler and wetter in the autumn, it is mostly sunny and dry. On the slopes of the Alps foothills therefore grow from soils of clay, loess, limestone and slate, also in contrast to the rest of Hungary, some excellent red wines from native grapes, especially Blaufränkisch (Kekfrankos) but also from Pinot Noir or Cabernet Sauvignon. But the white wines from Kroisbach and Sopron can be proud of! They are vinified primarily from Chardonnay, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc.
Cave Theatre Kroisbach

In wine village Kroisbach (Fertőrákos) we meet a remarkable quarry north of the village is on a hill. The occurring here white, easy processable Leitha limestone was before 10-12 million years ago, was covered as a whole Pannonia by an inland sea. Dismantling of the slightly shimmering pink rock has already begun under the Roman rule. Drilling in the remotest corners of the mountain was bizarre tunnels and caverns arise, reminiscent of ancient Egyptian tombs in the Valley of the Kings.
Due to the beautiful grain of the limestone was in the region a popular building material, which was used primarily in Sopron and Vienna for the construction of churches, public buildings, and houses. On the walls of the vast halls and 12-15m high columns can be similar to a calendar, follow the events of the past millions of years.

In summer, a variety of opera, theater and dance events are listed in the superb acoustics porticoes.
The "Cave Theater" as the whole spectacle is called, one should at Eisenstadt - Sopron - Morbisch Tour let the outside in no case before.
Tip: From the summit of the quarry to have a wonderful view of Lake Neusiedl.

So then: Goodbye in Kroisbach in Hungary!
The event took place on 19 August 1989 ... Gedenkstätte Pressburger Landstraße
The Pan-European picnic at the Austro-Hungarian border near the village of Kroisbach ...
With the agreement of both countries Austria and Hungary, a border gate on the old Pressburger Landstraße between Sankt Margarethen in Burgenland and Sopronkőhida (Steinambrückl) should be opened symbolically for three hours. The organizers of the picnic were members of the opposition Hungarian Democratic Forum and the Pan-European Union. The patrons were the President, Otto von Habsburg, a member of the CSU, and the Hungarian Minister of State and Reformer, Imre Pozsgay. The symbolic separation of the barbed wire was made by Mária Filep.
Between 600 and 700 GDR citizens used this short opening of the Iron Curtain to escape to the West, after they had previously been drawn to the pan-European picnic by organizers' leaflets. Completely unexpectedly stood around 15 clock again GDR citizens before the still guarded border gate. Shortly before 3 pm the gate was pushed back again, and the youngest people stormed on the Austrian side.
At the place where the frontier gate had been opened by the refugees, today a work of Hungarian artists is portrayed, which represents an opening door.
In 1996 a sculpture of Gabriela von Habsburg, a sculptor of sculptures, was erected in Kroisbach (Fertőrákos). It symbolizes a raised piece of barbed wire that has the shape of a cross from a distance.
